THE fire service was called to rescue a cat stuck up a tree in Stoke Gabriel on Friday.

One crew from Totnes was sent to Flood Street following the call at 4.41pm.

Watch commander Paul Chambers said the RSPCA had requested assistance to rescue the long-haired ginger cat which was stuck on a branch around 30ft off the ground, in a tree in a neighbour's garden.

He said: "We had to use our ladder to go up the trunk and start trimming back the tree so we could extend it so we could reach the cat at arm's length.

"The cat had been up there all day after being scared by a dog. The RSPCA were in attendance. He had caught his fur on a twig."

The cat was uninjured in the incident and was returned to his owner.
