AS spring approaches and Torquay's gardeners get to grips with those seasonal tasks, Torbay Council has set up a new service to save them a car or van trip to the recycling centre at Paignton.
The council recently launched a collection service for recyclable garden waste in Brixham, and now it is extending the service to Torquay.
Residents will be able to take along recyclable garden waste such as hedge trimmings and grass cuttings to Lymington Road coach station car park on the fourth Sunday of every month up to and including November between 9am and 1pm. The service will start on Sunday, March 22.
Help will be at hand to load the garden waste on to refuse vehicles, but gardeners are asked to note plastic bags, rubble, soil or branches more than four inches in diameter cannot be accepted.
Chris Lewis, cabinet member for waste management, said: "Torquay residents have been asking for this service for a while now, and we are pleased to have been able to bring it into operation at just the right time of year.
"It is important people note the dates and times when the service will be operating.
"Any garden waste taken to the coach station at any other time would be classed as fly tipping, and would jeopardise the whole project, so we would ask everyone to co-operate with us to make the service a success.
"We hope many people support this initiative. It is convenient for residents as they don't have to take their garden waste over to Paignton, and it also encourages recycling as hedge trimmings and grass cuttings can be turned into compost.
"Our household waste recycling centre at Paignton sometimes gets very busy, so providing a service in Torquay and Brixham each month will, hopefully, cut down traffic queues."
Brixham's service operates on the first Sunday of each month up to November. People can take their garden waste to the Brixham Community College car park between 9am and 1pm.
